Winter escape to the Skookumchuck tidal rapids

Skookumchuck

Right after Christmas, the opportunity came up to head to Skookumchuck and the sunshine coast. Myself and Jody headed over to explore the Sunshine coast area for a day or so. Then meet up with Garrett and Heather for a few days of surfing at Skookumchuck.

“The world is big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark.”

– John Muir

A bit of driving around and seeing a few different sights on the sunshine coast and a great hike. It was time to head to Egmont and get set up at our Airbnb. For the next day we would be heading out to the wave near the break of dawn. Winter time brings the wave in early in the am. We would bring boats in the first day, leave them at the wave till paddling them back out on the third day.

Time for Contemplation

We had a mixed bag of weather during our time at the wave. After the paddle in on the first day it was great to hike in with our headlamps, in the dark through the west coast forest, watching the light change as we got closer to the wave.

Garrett setting up for a trick

From surfing to hiking the place is top notch. It is interesting during my years of paddling that I haven’t made it here in over 20 years since my first time in 1998 in a Dagger Crossfire with Brian Oertli. Coming back with a proper playboat (Jackson Rockstar 5) was quite fun.

Garrett catching some air

We were able to paddle back on the last day after getting in some great surf sessions. Even got some time as the wave was dropping in my Karma UL (Jackson Kayak). Super fun getting some green wave surfing in. We had tides of 16 > down to about 12 knots which provided some fun and sometimes intimidating surf.

Author on the way back to Vancouver Island

After surfing for 3 days it was time to make our way back to the island. First stop in earls cover was Sharon’s Grill-it for a Crispy Chicken burger(Buttermilk Batter). Next up was tacos and margaritas at Costa del Sol in Powell river. Super tasty and a great stop for tasty food.

Hopefully the next trip will be sooner then the last one. Always great to get out for a fun adventure. #nrsambassador #Westerncanoeandkayak
