The Stein River Hike in – 1st Day

Last week I spent a number of days driving and paddling in South West BC. It’s a great place for adventure and getting out on rivers. I was able to paddle a number of rivers and sections during 6 days of paddling. My first day was spent on the lower Stein river and then an evening run on Cayoosh creek, including my first swim in a few years, more on that later.

I met up with Nice and Will at Kumsheen rafting. Once a bit of food was in we loaded up in Niceto’s jeep and heading off to the river. To get to the Stein Valley you have to cross the Fraser river on a fantastic ferry. Drive to the trailhead and then shoulder/backpack/walk your boat to your desired put in. I did a couple of runs on the Stein over two days and will have a back pack the next time I head up it.

We hiked about 2ish KM up the river the first day and then blitzed down the run. It was a nice warm up run before the Cayoosh. Lots of fun boulder gardens, some great lines, whitewater as far as you could see.

After running down, Nice ran the shuttle and we loaded all the gear up and headed for Lilloett and Cayoosh Creek. After getting one of Niceto and Will’s friends to drive shuttle we headed in the Canyon at a nice medium flow. I had my swim at the bottom of the portage rapid, went a little to far left and was scraped along the wall, luckily my boat eddied out shortly downstream on river left. A short swim and we were reconected.

The rest of the run went well and was just as amazing as I remembered from past trips.

Enjoy these photos.
