Oyster River Paddle

Located north of the Comox Valley is the Oyster river. This is a great river which offers class 3-4+ paddling (flow dependent) less than an hour of town. Had a good crew to meet up with Paul, Tudor, Ian, Toni and myself. A few of us met at Hamm rd, then Ian and I set shuttle to James rd.

The Oyster was running about 90cms (approx 3170 Cfs), we put in just below the slide at the Oyster river potholes, great article here, if you like photography, from low water. Above 80 cms the river starts to have a few more options for lines and some of the holes become a bit sticker. The ledges start to come a bit more into play. A few spots have a nice canyon feel to them and get to see some great scenery during the 10km paddle.

The river mellows out a bit after Woodhus creek enters from river left on the lower section. Picking up again near the powerlines with one nice class 3 rapid. A series of waves and holes follow for the next couple km’s. Look for the takeout on river left down a little ways.

We had a mix of rain, and sun complete with rainbows. A great day out for a paddle.

Enjoy the photos,
