Learning how to Paddle

Whitewater is a love of mine. As Fall arrives it means I get to participate in teaching a new group of students at Strathcona Park Lodge with the COLT( Canadain Outdoor Leadership Training Program).

COLT students on the Gold River during day two of their Whitewater training

The weather this past weekend was perfect for learning. Scott, Marco, and I had a great group of 8 students. It was a nice day of learning strokes, boat control, and the roll on Upper Campbell lake on day 1.

Students rocking their rolls, t- rescues, and teamwork on day 2

We had a mixed bag of weather over the three days, spent time on two different rivers, (the Gold river and the Campbell river), which gave the students the opportunity to work on their skills from ferries, eddy catching, scouting, surfing, effective paddling techniques.

I also enjoy exploring around the Lodge and usually try to catch some views in the hills above the Lodge after classes are done.

We had some good times and the stoke was high. The students were keen to push themselves and work on their skills. It was excellent to watch them improve and support each other over the three days.

Stoked at the end of the 3 days of paddling and some trash collection for #bcriversday2021

Look forward to Whitewater 2 with the group of students. #whitewaterismagic
