The Cottonwood river is located just north of Quesnel, BC. It rises at the confluence of the Swift River and Lightning Creek at Coldspring House in the Cariboo goldfields of the northern Cariboo Plateau, it flows northwest and then turns southwest to join the Quesnel river just upstream it’s confluence with the Fraser. While in Quesnel Tyler and myself decided to go and make a run down it, the river itself was quite low. It made for some bumpy paddling before and after the canyon sections. The river was very beautiful, the canyon sections being amazing and would be great with another foot or so of water.
We managed to make it down in around 4.5 hours ran some fun drops and chutes through the canyons. It would be a beautiful run in the fall, with the changing colours of the leaves. The best time to paddle is toward mid-sept into october and in the spring before the river gets high. If your coming throught the area hit up Big Canyon Rafting Co Ltd for more info on the run.
