Adventure down the Babine River

2020 has been an interesting year… that is for sure. At one point in September I managed to get out with some amazing staff with Nahanni and Canadian River Expeditions on the Babine and Skeena rivers for 5 days.

Road to the river

The river delivered adventure, fun, laughs, bears, eagles, fossil hunting, exploring, good flows, Margaritas, Caesars, Books, Dinner by the fire, rafting in the dark, so many good times.

We spent the mornings drinking good coffee, eating a hearty breakfast, then getting camp gear packed up, before spending the day floating down the river.

Leaving a beach stop

At one point we stopped and wandered up a creek for a little bit to find some very cool fossils. Between running loads of rapids, watching eagles soar through the sky, checking out bears at grizzly falls, having donuts at slide/waterfall camp.

The spot above was one of neater camps, it was a bit tight with a larger group but what a spot. A waterfall tucked into a corner, some good exploring options and one heck of a good game of stick charades.

Some of the classic whitewater we ran included Grizzly drop, pictured above, which usually has a number of bears waiting for fish. After that it was  Sphincter 1 and 2, then a fun section through Kisgegas Canyon. The section down to Waterfall/Slide camp was also quite a fun section of whitewater.

After leaving the Babine you then take a left hand turn onto the Skeena river. You can either camp at the confluence or shortly downstream there is a fantastic spot to camp on river left at the tail end of an island.

Arriving at the Skeena camp we got set up and made sure we had food cooking and margaritas on the way.

Sunset on the Skeena

Heading down the Skeena river the next day was  a treat, we were also joined by some participants of the YOY program run through the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition. We enjoyed some big water class 3 as we paddled down the Skeena river to Hazelton.

An amazing 5 days spent on a terrific river system with some fantastic people. We finished off the trip with a drive back to Bulkley River Lodge, Tequila and good food. Till the next grand staff adventure with Nahanni.com

cheers
