This year took me to the Yukon for a little over a month and a half.
I ended up doing a trip down the Alsek river in mid July, coming back to Whitehorse in time to organize a day of kayaking on the Tutshi river with help from friends at Tat Expeditions. After that it was back to back trips trip leading down the Tatshenshini river.
The Alsek river was a good trip, we had 19 clients on that trip, brilliant weather for the most part. This was my 2nd trip down the Alsek and was good to get a better feeling for the river. Always exciting with some amazing scenery, great rapids, a heli portage and good conversations. The Alsek river starts with the confluence of the Kaskawulsh and Dezadeash rivers flowing out of Kluane National Park draining an area of 28,000 sq km as it heads to the Gulf of Alaska.

The two trips on the Tatshenshini were quite different. Both in group sizes and with the weather we had. That can make all the difference but fortunately we had some clearing days on the 2nd trip which provided some excellent views.
The Tatshenshini starts from Dalton Post making its way toward the Alsek river. As it does it heads out of the Yukon and into BC, passing through amazing terrain. Giving you subtle foreshadowing of where your journey will be going. When you eventually join the Alsek river you head out to Alaska and finish at Dry Bay, a mere few kilometers from the Gulf of Alaska.
This year was a bit wetter then years in the past, even got the extra day down in Dry Bay. Good times with some great people made for an excellent season. My hands survived as well, good thing for work gloves.
Look forward to the next season in the Yukon, Northern BC and Alaska.
