Had a coffee in my hand, cruising down the island highway got the call to meet Mike Neville down at the Gas Station near Little Qualicum Falls. We did the transfer of boats and gear to my car, always a bit nerve racking as you think something you might need later might get left behind. We made it to Port Alberni in good time.
Loading up we headed to the local bakery to pickup some good eats. Loaded with food and coffee we headed off to check on two different creek options. There was a bit of water around but one of our options at this point was too low. Not that it would need much, you can jump across it at the top it is so small. The other had a bit of flow and looked good.
We were looking at around 4cms and 4.5kms to the confluence of river and ocean. It was a bit sunny and things were looking good. Of course we didn’t put on to the river till 1pm. Glad it is June because missions, such as this, on the Island have a habit of taking awhile and usually would end in the dark. Not this time, made it to the BBQ before dark, though just.
There was some really cool drops, but quite a bit of mank as well. It was neat to check it out, won’t become a classic run on the Island at this point in time. Some other runs to check out in the area are the Franklin, Corrigan, Ash, Stamp and quite a few more in the Bamfield area.
